Announcement for our NCTJ diploma students

The NCTJ has updated its arrangements for the transition to the new diploma.

Please read this carefully:

Reporting exam

There will now be another Reporting Exam sitting in July 2017. 

This is in addition to the one this month.

The July sitting is your final chance to sit the Reporting Exam.

From September 2017, you will have to sit the new Essential Journalism (EJ) and Essential Ethics and Regulation (EER) exams instead.


The submission deadline under the current arrangements is August 31, 2017.

There are new Mandatory requirements from September 1, 2017. You can read them here

Many of our students are using them already.

Essential Journalism and Essential Ethics and Regulation exams

We will be proving tutorial support for the new EJ and EER exams.

They are conducted online.

The NCTJ will be now be the running mock exams for both these subjects on specific dates, via a special website.

These will replace the mock exams that we provide.

We will announce details when they are available.

EJ Exam: outline details

  • 2hrs
  • 13 questions.
  • Questions 1-4 have a 30min deadline.You have to write a story of between 140-160 words, sourced from a press release and a video; write a heading for the story; and select an extract from the video to use on social media.
  • Q5: you have to update the above story with new info.
  • Q6: explain how you would use Facebook to get more info, and then write two Facebook posts.
  • Q7: Suggest images to go with your Facebook posts.
  • Q8: Suggest interview questions.
  • Q9: suggest two additional sources and justify them.
  • Q10: A question about online media: eg - Google analytics.
  • Q11-13: Make ethical decisions based on the Ipso code on given information.

EER Exam: outline details

This is a multiple choice exam where you have to select the correct answer for a range of questions about the Ipso Code.

Other subjects

There are no changes to any other NCTJ diploma subjects, apart from the annual syllabus changes in September.

There will be substantial changes to the EPA syllabus following Brexit and the General Elections.

New diploma structure

The NCTJ has changed its diploma subjects structure.

You now have to sit:
  • Four Mandatory Skills modules, totalling 47 credits.
  • A selection of Elective Skills modules, totalling 35 credits (or more).
You can still study the subjects you signed up for, but may need to add others.
